In 1928, long before the Hawaiian Open became a part of the PGA tour, tournament golf at Waialae became the premier event in Hawaii for many local and visiting professional golfers. In its early years, the Hawaiian Open attracted such local and international talent as Gene Sarazan, 1934 winner; Johnny Farrell; Francis H. I‘i Brown and Arthur Bell, two-time Hawaiian Open winner. Until 1965 the tourney was always played in November. With the popularity of NFL football on weekend television, it was felt that Hawaii would have better national exposure if the tournament were held during one of the Mainland’s coldest months. It was moved to February and became one of the highest rated sports shows on television. Now called the SONY Open, since 1999, the event is held in January.
